Hospital beds

Data on all hospital beds and curative hospital beds were derived from the Eurostat database (most recent data extracted for each country) and data on critical care beds was derived from Rhodes et al. [1]. The COVID-19 related deaths and active cases were obtained from https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/.

Intensity approach

This bar chart displays the number of cumulative COVID-19 related deaths in the past 21 days relative to the base capacity of hospital beds. The country-level base capacity is represented by three types of hospital beds: “all hospital beds”, “only curative hospital beds” and “only critical care beds”. The data is normalized to the situation in Italy on 11 March, 2020. As such, a score of 1 for a specific country and measure today, represents a pressure similar to Italy on 11 March on the base capacity of this country. Magnitude approach

This bar chart displays the number of active reported COVID-19 cases relative to the base capacity of hospital beds. The country-level base capacity is represented by three types of hospital beds: “all hospital beds”, “only curative hospital beds” and “only critical care beds”. The data is normalized to the situation in Italy on 11 March, 2020. As such, a score of 1 for a specific country and measure today, represents a pressure similar to Italy on 11 March on the base capacity of this country.
