Physicians
Data on the number of physicians and generalist medical practitioners were derived from the Eurostat database (most recent data extracted for each country). The COVID-19 related deaths and active cases were obtained from https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/.
Intensity approach
This bar chart displays the number of cumulative COVID-19 related deaths in the past 21 days relative to the base capacity of physicians. The country-level base capacity is represented by two types of physicians: “all physicians” and “generalist medical practitioners”. The data is normalized to the situation in Italy on 11 March, 2020. As such, a score of 1 for a specific country and measure today, represents a pressure similar to Italy on 11 March on the base capacity of this country. Magnitude approach
This bar chart displays the number of active reported COVID-19 cases relative to the base capacity of physicians. The country-level base capacity is represented by two types of physicians: “all physicians” and “generalist medical practitioners”. The data is normalized to the situation in Italy on 11 March, 2020. As such, a score of 1 for a specific country and measure today, represents a pressure similar to Italy on 11 March on the base capacity of this country. Note that for the following countries, active cases are no longer updated on the worldometers.info website, hence these countries are not depicted in the figure: Iceland, Turkey.
